Ever since watching a PBS telethon, I was hooked. I am absolutely fascinated how Dick Proenneke literally built his life piece by piece with his own two hands. Even more, he was smart about it. He didn't just trek out to the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter with just a backpack and beef jerky, he was resourceful and realistic - he secured a cabin to stay in while he was building his own. He built a beautiful cabin, collected wood for his heat, hunted and gathered for food, and most of all enjoyed all Alaska had to offer him. His respect for nature - the land, the animals, himself - and his recognition of being one with his surroundings and not trying to control it, all contribute to what made him successful in achieving his dream. A true must-read for adventurers and dreamers alike.
