This book is built on an interesting premise: A young woman outlaw marries a man in order to escape the hangmans noose. Twenty year-old Jolie McKibben has a noose around her neck and is standing in a hay wagon - waiting for the hangman to say the last words she will hear.
A young farmer, Daniel Beckham, sees the imminent death of the young lady and the judge offers him the opportunity to marry her by invoking the wedding ordinance.
Actually, this is THE WIVES OF BOWIE STONE (by Maggie Osborne) in reverse. If youve read that treasure, you understand the basis of this novel. The story takes place in Prosperity, Washington Territory in 1877.
There is plenty of action and the cause-and-effects are reasonable and interesting. I couldnt put the book down and read it in a few hours. This is one of the best LLM books Ive read.
The only issues I had revolved around the resolution of the novel. The last 7 pages were chock full of paragraphs tying up the large number of threads running through the book. It seemed a bit rushed.
** SPOILER ** Also, the person who finds Jolie (in the last pages) has miraculously recovered from a serious ailment which seems impossible in such a short time frame.
However, this is an engaging book with lots of twists and turns. Enjoy!
