High Constable Jacob Hayes is charged with solving three brutal murders in New York City in the summer of 1841. Gang wars, grave robbers and the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe figure in this tale of a simpler and darker time. Wonderful descriptive prose describes the corruption and politics, scandal and bawdy life, so real it seems plausible.
