I initially had a hard time getting into the book because I was expecting it to be another book with Lou Mason as the protagonist. Instead, I found myself reading about Special Agent Jack Davis. This book does take place in Kansas City, just as the Mason books do. Joel writes about a town he knows well. Davis is placed on suspension
because of a severe attack of the shakes at a crime scene. He has to see a doctor (or doctors) to see if the shakes he keeps having are due to something physical, or if it's all mental fatigue. His relationship with his daughter, his almost ex-wife, and other friends is complicated. His son was assaulted and killed by a neighbor year ago. This led to the breakup of his marriage. We know the killer from the beginning (at least at the initial crime scene)and it will be interesting to see if Jack Davis figures it out (he's not supposed to be working on ANY cases) before the killer decides Jack needs to
go. The fact the Jack's daughter is dating an undercover agent who may be involved with the crime complicates things even more. I'd enjoy reading another book about Jack Davis.
