Full disclosure: I got this book free from Kirkus Reviews, so perhaps Im predisposed to give the story a positive rating.

This is the story of Nick and Amy Dunne, a married couple with a relationship on the rocks. Nick is a pretty awful person, and Amy is worse. And while ordinarily that would make me hate the protagonists and dislike the story, in this novel, its pure gold. The author (Gillian Flynn) does an absolutely fantastic job of letting us inside these peoples heads, and makes us care just enough to take us on a wild roller coaster ride.

This was a summer read well worth taking, though somehow it feels more appropriate for the vacation cottage in the woods than a lounger on the beach. Something about the lurking evil vibe that the book gives off, I guess. (Maybe Im thinking suspense and horror genres are best for the woods, and over-the-top hedonistic romps are for the beach.)

At any rate: Go sit on a tree stump in the woods and give this book a shot. It was well worth the read.

5 of 5 stars.
