I thought immediately of the very popular book for youth of the first half of the 20th C., The Secret Garden (which I have read), and Ms. Nair confesses that was a much loved book of her own youth and an inspiration for this book. She experienced the age-old India of her ancestors during a trip there after growing up in the USA and being a very successful English major (Wellesley, Oxford, Trinity College).
