Book Review of Woe to Live On

Woe to Live On
Woe to Live On
Author: Daniel Woodrell
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Book Type: Paperback
Helpful Score: 1

I wanted to love this book - Woodrell writes some fine stuff. The period of Civil War and Kansas/MO setting was most interesting. And the characters were well drawn. I think the book jacket is right that his style on this was both brutal and 'touched with poetry.' But I guess in some ways the whole thing was just too depressing. Yeah, I realize fighting along the edges of the War, living off looting, and trying to sort out who is friend and who is foe was no walk in the park. Guess the realism factor was just too grubby for me to get terribly attached to anyone. But I'll agree his writing skills are top drawer!
