This is a spinoff of the author's Seneca Falls Historical Mysteries, especially the book "The Stalking Horse." Actually the Seneca Falls series is one of my favorite historical fiction series by a female author, where the principle character(s) are female. All those plots take place before the Civil War. As a result, in "Sisters of Cain," some references are made to events---such as meeting people---which took place in "The Stalking Horse." Even I had trouble remembering those events, as I read "The Stalking Horse" long ago. However, there are only a few such references and if you just take them for granted they don't detract from the story. One such reference is used to explain why the main female character knew Lincoln before he arrived in Washington. D.C., and why Lincoln is on a more familiar relationship with her. This upsets Allan Pinkerton---who headed up the famous detective agency---and who fired her from her position in that agency. Too bad, Allan, you goofed!

In this short three book series Beginning with "Sisters of Cain," two strong female leads, one a Union secret service agent and the other a nurse, go after Confederate spies and double-agents. While this is not a YA book, I recommend it for older YA girls as a good introductory exposure to the Civil War.
