Some of my favorite secondary characters are showcased in NEW TRICKS and the book is more fun for their inclusion. Judge Hatchet loves to cut Andy down to size and Marcus keeps up his wild banter with Andy throughout the case. Unfortunately, Marcus gets a bit heavy-handed with a murder suspect and the next time we hear of the said suspect, he's been pulled out of a body of water. It's just another day in Paradise (Andy-style).

This case is actually about a young man who has been accused of killing his father and stepmother. His father was worth about 1/2 billion dollars; he was the founder of a progressive pharmaceutical company. The FBI is involved, but they aren't talking.

There's a second case and Andy is directly involved in this one too. Hatchet makes Andy take the dead man's show dog, pending a hearing on who should be given the dog permanently -- the son (currently accused of his father's murder) or a friend/competitor, who raises Andy's hackles.

The case starts out looking like there can be no one else guilty but the son. Slowly, Andy-and-company chip away at the darkness until a new suspect becomes clear. Now, if Andy can make the muddy water clear for the jury.
