The character Ethan Frome is the literary embodiment of Wharton quote, Life is the saddest thing, next to death.
The setting is wintry and claustrophobic. Ethan is full of passion and yearning, but has no drive or purpose. All the characters are fully developed and very real. I enjoyed it immensely.
