Clare is a flawed heroine; she had a child out of wedlock. The child died, and her brother has a tight reign on her actions. Clare came to India to get written permission from her brother to sell the house she inherited from her aunt. While in India, she meets a ne'er-do-well, Captain Fred Wheatly. Talk about a pair of pitiful specimens. Fred must bury his mistress and suddenly realizes he is the father to two half-caste daughters. He knows he is poorly equipped to raise children and tries convincing Clare to marry him. His goal is not a happy home life; he wants to leave the girls with Clare while he signs on to fight for the French or the Ottomans.

This story is unusual but brings the folks back from the previous story (see below)âengaging and fascinating reading. I can't wait to read the last book in this series.
