I consider Aiken Hodge a "guilty pleasure", the best of the historical/mystery/romance authors I used to call "junk books" when I was a teenager. She was, for me, a cut above the Victoria Holt/Phyllis Whitney-type stuff I liked then. She's the only one I'm willing to re-read as an adult, and I've been enjoying doing so. But Strangers in Company is one of her weakest efforts; the plot is pretty unbelievable, writing disjointed, characters sketchy and interchangeable. A disappointment.
