He had seemed a suspicious sort on the coach with his black greatcoat and hat pulled low. But any man who was willing to protect Jillian St. Emey's virtue, and get shot in the process, certainly deserved her help. She had every intention of nursing this handsome scoundrel back to health and then making her way to London, alone. However, ridding herself of this mddening rogue was proving to be more vexing than she expected, for what had started as an amusing game of flirtation had suddenly become a battle for love. What had possed him to defend that outspoken female in the coach, Jack Mackinnon wondered. His secret mission for the British government left no time for getting shot and stranded on a desolate moor with a veritable shrew for company. It would be a devil of a time getting to London now, what with dodging bullets and avoiding the alluring charms of his new companion. But he was determined to complete his journey, and with this lovely lady at his side, it was bound to be an interesting one indeed.
