Morgan Kane is one of three men who rush in to save 3 nuns from a group of Comanches who are set on killing the women. Morgan is a Union Army officer on a secret mission and needs to get to Galveston right away so he takes Amelia with him thinking he is dealing with a docile, meek nun. Nope, she is a head strong, I will do it my way con artist who is not happy being taken further and further away from her home at the orphanage at Mercy Flats. Morgan gives Amelia enough money to buy passage back to Mercy Flats but being bound and determined that she is not going to do anything "a man" tells her to do she ends up falling victim to a human traffic gang and is placed on a paddleboat with 11 other women. When Morgan realizes that she has been taken in by a con artist, he disguises himself to get on the boat and rescue her. Again Amelia can't do as she is told/asked and she comes close to getting Morgan in trouble. While he plans to only rescue Amelia, she decides to take all of the other women with her. Thus begins a cat and mouse game with the trafficers as they race up the Mississippi River, as well as a verbal sparring between Morgan and Amelia as they race to get back to Memphis. Amelia gets back to Mercy Flats (with all the stolen women and the crew of the boat they used to escape) and realizes that she loves Morgan and does not want to let him go. He realizes the same thing and they make plans for their future together.
This was a nice wrap up to the Sister of Mercy Flats trilogy.
