Historical tale by Robert Goolrick, my first by this author. It's complicated. Lonely, wealthy, Ralph Truitt advertises for a honest woman to be his wife. Catherine Land answers his inquiry, and she is anything but an honest woman. Ralph hopes to marry, reconcile with his long lost son, and find peace. This is not a feel-good book. The main characters have very few redeeming qualities and I found them almost impossible to like. The book has a stark, depressing tone. I did like the ending. Read this one when you want to torture yourself.
