Margo Lanagan is an amazing writer! Her stories are tightly written, dark little gems that leave you faintly unsettled. If I had to describe this collection, I would call it creepy fairy tales with strong elements of fantasy. In "Baby Jane" young Dylan must help the Queen deliver her baby, the Queen that was once a small figurine. "Under Hell, Over Heaven" explores the notion of Purgatory and how one might pass the time..or escape. "Hero Vale" is a place where one's life can be completely transformed. I highly recommend this collection, and will definitely read more of Lanagan's work.
