Excellent book. I remembered reading this as a child, and I picked it up again to read it to my own children. I am so glad that I did! The story is about Charlotte Doyle's crossing from England to American. Without chaperone or companions, the young maiden is left aboard this strange ship with a charming captain, ruffians of a crew, a stowaway, and a dire warning to take heed. She soon finds her world turned upside down only to rely on her sense of honor, justice, and truth to see her through. Avi does a wonderful job of keeping the reader wanting more. One is always asking the question "What will happen next?" Charlotte Doyle is a heroine that one can't help but root for, and it was a pleasure to read her story again.
