This book covers the reign of the second son of Cinhil, King Javan, who refuses to knuckle under to the great lords of Gwynedd. The great lords, who were regents of Gwynedd while King Alroy was underage, want to rule Gwyness again. King Javan works in secret with the Deryni to learn the full use of his powers and to break the kingdom free of the influence of the power-hungry lords. This is an excellent follow up to The Harrowing of Gwynedd, though it is obvious from the beginning that King Javan is doomed.
