This novel may have been developed from two excellent short stories; I can't say, not having read them, but I couldn't finish it. I was drawn to The Windup Girl because the setting is Southeast Asia and the situation is a post-petroleum genetically-engineered future. Unfortunately, the movement of the story is slow and parts are predictable. There are people who will like it, maybe those who like anything cyberpunk, but to me the characterization could have come out of a Graham Greene novel from the Fifties. In a way that is difficult to put my finger on I developed a dislike for The Windup Girl, and put it down.
