Tribal policeman Jim Chee hunts for a killer from the Navajo reservation all the way to Las Angeles and back while trying to find a young girl who does not realize she is in danger from the same man. This book involves hired killers, mafia, and the witness protection program, which is why I feel it is not one of Hillerman's better works. This is the seventh of the Chee/Leaphorn books, featuring only Chee. Chee is not only a policeman but studying to learn the healing arts of his people before they are lost forever. There is a significant amount of Navajo lore in this one.
