There are several reasons why a person who owns dozens of gardening books might buy another. This is the second edition of a classic gardening manual, initially published in 2012. New varieties come to the market yearly.

This book highlights the best and why you want to grow a variety in your neighborhood. Texas has several radically different growing areas, and this guide helps you find the best type for your locale. First, there is an extensive section of vegetables and herbs, plus the fruits and nuts that grow in Texas. Then, after making selections of varieties, I move to the back section, recognizing "Symptoms of Nutrient Deficiencies, Growing Transplants," and many others.

There is a great bonus at the back of this book, "My Family Recipes." I've made several, and they were all superb. My absolute favorite is "Aggie Salsa." The full-color photos are remarkable, and the directions are helpful for any grower -- from a black thumb to the greenest thumbed grower.
