Utterly charming! In some ways this reminded me of Austen's Persuasion in that Miss Sophie had to live with regrets and lost youth. However, she hadn't lost her spirit and had a sense of her own self. She wasn't a silly girl. What charmed me so much was Lazarus's vulnerability: although he was sure of his love for her, he wasn't so confident that he could win her. I loved the exchange of lessons; she tutored him in reading in exchange for his kisses. In spite of his younger age, I had a strong sense of his maturity due to his life experiences. I actually could feel Sophie falling in love with Lazarus and their lessons were perfectly lusty. A wonderful read and strongly recommended. 4 stars.
