Magic in the Blood picks up where the last novel [Magic in The Bone] left off. Allie has lost her memory of what happened in the previous novel, but that doesn't stop all manner of creatures from coming after her.

It's refreshing to have something different in the multiverse of urban fantasy. This series features one of the best urban fantasy constructs I've ever come across, and I love the idea that using magic always extracts a toll. Too many authors give their leads all the powers with none of the pain, and it feels realistic when the scales are balanced between good and bad.

Allie isn't completely tough as nails, but she isn't a push over either. She is flawed and has trust issues, which I think makes her more realistic. With all of the tough-chick man magnets that lead the genre, it's nice to have a more realistic heroine, that actually gets hurt. And she will get hurt.

Sure there are some flaws, some parts of the novel drag, sometimes Allie's woe is me attitude is grating, but overall the novel is very good. There are plenty of surprises, large doses of suspense, and even some creepiness. I can't wait to read the next novel.
