Setting is present day Indonesia. Story involves a small number of characters...with symbolism galore. Themes include mainly good versus evil but also the folly of detachment and the power of love. There is no happy ending. Language can be difficult in places and flashbacks are often used.
As an aside - Conrad seemed to overuse the word "languid" - it was almost annoying.
Overall grade B+
Note: this is the favorite novel of journalist - Joan Didion.
