You won't want to put this down. Based on a true story, the whole book gives the feeling of this whole family and how it is affected by the mother being found guilty for the murder of her husband, after he is found, hit twice in the head by someone with an axe. This happens while the wife and husband are sleeping. Dog acts odd, children all support the mother, the father having been a really nasty man to his family. How one action by one individual affects this whole family. Late 1800s-early 1900s and a different time in this country where women were not allowed on a jury (jury of her peers?), where a farm wife had certain expectations not only in her chores, but also in how she was expected to react. A mesmerizing read.
