I have read several of the books in this series, but out of order. I find that by the end you have enough information to piece together the story (OK, yes, pun intended..it is a series about quiliting!) and enjoy them each as a stand alone story. This story has so many social themes "pieced" within the story: vote for women, women's right, vote for everyone (no matter the color or gender), treatment of prisoners of war that it keeps you interested in the story beyond the main theme of the civil war. I look forward to reading another one of this authors books that is sitting on my bookshelves.
