Mundu, the boy from the rainforest, is fresh and exotic and filled with mythical power and probably the most engaging character introduced in print in ages. The loving way he is described and accepted by his "civilized" new family and surroundings pays testimony to the beauty of all that is wild in Brazil. He literally leaps off the pages and wins your heart and all the protective instincts kick in. Should this astonishingly athletic Amazonian be removed from his quiet village and turned into an nationally recognized Olympic long jumper? Can his future be shaped by modern methods of self-destruction (self-interests, cellphones, twitter, teenage lust? Or can he bring a little native evolution to the go-go-go culture that has forgotten its essential background and history? Every page will leave you wondering as influences beyond his control battle for his talent and soul. Well worth the read!
