I didn't know quite what to make of this book. It's not an urban fantasy, not cool and clever enough. It's not erotica, not really erotic enough. It's kind of a love story, but there is an awful lot of backstory and kids involved. It actually felt like she had written 300 pages before hand that had been edited out, and bits shoved back in to make this story make sense. I haven't read a love story with so much plot in a long time. It felt a bit like a Patricia Briggs novel, but not as well written.
The blurb gives the wrong picture too - with a an control freak ex and two teenage kids, Diana has her own problems and no need to borrow anyone else's troubles. She's an Empath though, and the young wolven pack that lands in her lap is dfficult to ignore or dissuade from their determination to adopt her as den mother.
But her control freak husband gets about 2 pages, so why is he in the blurb and her relationship with her son doesn't seem real to me. She's an untrained Empath and then all of sudden does very sophisticated magic. The twin boys are Brandon and Bradley - which are far too easy to confuse. It felt badly edited, like a self published novel.
What I'm trying to say, is that there is a very good book trying to get out of this one, but it didn't quite make it. I'm giving it 2.5 stars because at least the author (and could Buffi BeCraft-Woodall be a real name? and if not, then why make it up, another oddity) is trying something a bit different, but she doesn't land in any fixed genre, and it wasn't especially well written. I may read another of her books, but I'm not running to amazon to get her back order.
