A fitting final tribute to Nonnatus House, the convent where the author trained in midwifery, Farewell to the East End ties up the loose ends. Since the characters are established in the prior volumes, there is less cohesion between chapters as the daily life of the convent no longer serves as the glue holding events together. It's the type of book one would like if one wants "the whole story" but not if one wants to imagine the characters living on as they are, for example in a perpetual television series.
