The latest, if not the last, of the Firekeeper saga, this one started out slowly, so that even I as a fan of the series kept putting it aside and having a hard time picking it up again. It picks up where the previous story left off, after Firekeeper and friends have taken over the Nexus Islands which is the waypoint for the sorcerer's gates to the different lands. They have closed the gates which are the easiest trade routes for all the different nations, angering them into banding together against an unknown foe to try and regain control. Meanwhile, Firekeeper goes on a quest to find the cure for the deadly sickness querinalo that can destroy a person's magical ability if it does not kill him. Once the storyline sped up at around page 135 or so it finally perked up my interest enough to keep me up late trying to get to its rousing climax. While there is a tone of finality to this volume, there is certainly enough room for more adventures for the wolf-girl and her pack if Lindskold intends to continue the series, which would definitely be welcome.
