Sometimes I want a simple, straightforward romance without major plot complications, but Alex and Jocelyn's friends-to-lovers romance, while sweet, didn't grab me and the scholarly bits bored me. The pace was just too slow while they teased and sorted their feelings, and the usual obstacles (differences in status, uncertain developing love, Jocelyn's secret writing career, the duke's disapproval) felt cookie cutter. Of course, things worked out for them in the end, but I've enjoyed other Justiss stories more than this one. Teetering at 3 stars.
