A fantastic read. I highly recommend this for people who enjoy paranormal fiction. This contemporary story set in the Deep South is gothic and supernatural, but not predictable. There's something about setting a story in South Carolina that makes a story like this even more thrilling and gothic. Maybe it's the old plantation mansions with their tragic and troubled history, but the setting is definitely a character in the story which grabbed me by the lapels and didn't let go until the end. I finished this book, which is about 600 pages, in two days. The story is well plotted and paced. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen in the next chapter.
While this book is aimed at a YA audience, an adult will enjoy this. This is much darker than Harry Potter and infinitely better than Twilight. The story is told from the first person point of view of the hero, Ethan Wate, a high school sophomore. He's a bright, likable young man whose mother, a professor, was killed in an accident not too long before the story begins. He starts having strange haunting dreams and soon a mysterious young woman moves into town. No, it's not his dead mother. I won't give away the ending. Read the book. I will be keeping my copy for this is a keeper in my ever expanding book collection.
