You don't find too many books set in the 1600's, during the reign of Charles I, so I was intrigued from the first. The descriptions of the filth of the poor & the arrogance and ennui of the rich painted such rich pictures in my mind that I felt I was truly there.
The two main characters fall in love right away, and you know that some evil must befall them eventually, but when it does, you are still agast at the sheer evil of it all. It only underscores the deceit and hypocricy of the royalty.Of course, true love does prevail (it HAS to, doesn't it?) and you can't help but love the victory taken by the female lead - what a great character she is! The first half of the book was a bit plodding, but when you get to the political intrigue, it makes it all worthwhile.
