This is the tale of two teenage boys from dramatically different backgrounds who find themselves forced to become members of the Burmese army that is fighting to quell tribal uprisings against the military regime. Chiko is studious and intellectual from a rather well off family until his father is arrested. Tai is a street smart individual whose only family is a sister and he is determined to go back and take care of her. Their friendship helps Chiko whose physical prowess is nil survive the training. Chiko teaches Tai to read and write and assists their commander in dealing with the written communications that he receives daily.
The story expanded to include a third boy who fights for the opposition. He finds Chiko injured by a mine and takes him to a medical facility. While he loses his leg, he becomes friends with Tu Reh finds himself torn as he saves the boy's life. Shouldn't he kill this soldier? The tale spins on from that point as Chiko's life is in danger from those who believe that all soldiers are enemies and should be destroyed. After all, Chiko may be a spy. Quite an informative read.
