Story of a forbidden friendship between two young girls in the south during the KKK era. Beatrice/Betty has never experienced acceptance or love from her own family. When she prevents a beating of a young black girl and is befriended by her family, a bond grows despite the dangers and threats they both experience. It's a friendship that survives a lifetime and has a surprising ending.
