This is an excellent brief-but-thorough introduction to Buddhism from a very reliable Buddhist publisher. One of the first introductory books I read, and it remains one of the best. Not dry, jargon-filled, or complicated; this book explains difficult topics (e.g. not-self) in simple, everyday language. The author writes from a Vajrayana background, but the book is also suitable for people interested in Theravada and other Mahayana traditions like Zen.
