Summary:
Eddie Red has a photographic memory. He also is a superb artist. He has a talent for being able to draw something identically to what he sees. While there is a group of art thieves around called the Picasso Gang, the police are desperate for some help. Because of his talents, they hire Eddie Red on to help them solve this case. This works out great for him because he desperately needs the money after his dead was laid off from work and his tuition at the Senate Academy needs to be paid. How will this eccentric sixth grader survive life in the police department? You'll just have to read and find out.
My thoughts:
Of course you must suspend belief when picking up this book, but overall it is really a lot of fun. There is a tad bit of mystery that an older audience will quickly unravel, but a 4th grader would probably hang with longer. The real gem is the character development. Eddie Red is hilarious. He has a lot of quirks which add to his overall charm. He is also very much like a sixth grader with little attention span. This gets him into trouble from time to time. While working with the police, he doesn't seem to understand that he is in danger sometimes. When he finally gets it, it could very well be too late. Most of the time, there are chuckle worthy incidents in a fast paced novel (with a few pictures added in). I enjoyed it and believe that early middle school students will as well.
