A friend gave me this book for my birthday one year. Don't recall how long I've had it but yesterday (4/8/2024) I was ready to start a new book and wanted something that would be quick. This book fit the bill--it's about the size of a small paperback and is only 120 pages. I read a few pages yesterday and managed to finish the book over lunch today.
I noticed that the only character in the book who had a name was the cat, Frankie. I suspect that was a deliberate choice by the author. For me, that didn't detract from the story. Frankie was a tiny, drenched kitten when "the bachelor" took her in and ultimately kept her. The two other main characters were "the girlfriend" and "the woman." The "girlfriend" was very attractive, apparently was aware of it, and used her looks to manipulate men--including the bachelor, who couldn't let go of the relationship even though it wasn't very satisfying for him. "The woman" was a gal he met at a bar and had an immediate connection with but she was a bit on the heavier side, which bothered the bachelor.
Those who wrote one- and two-star reviews on other sites were disturbed by the way "the woman" was described--how her weight bothered the bachelor. However, I wasn't put off by the fact that the bachelor was bothered by the woman's weight. First, the book was written in 1997, nearly 30 years ago and I suspect that most men then (and probably still today) could be initially put off by a female who was overweight. And, if women were truly honest, they would probably feel the same way about a guy who was overweight. So, to me, the bachelor's initial reaction to the woman's weight came across as honest. Some of the one- and two-star reviews on other sites also commented on how shallow the bachelor was. The point of the story (as I interpreted it) was to show the impact one tiny kitten could have on a human being.
