The writing is good. The story telling is excellent. The book starts with interesting characters and a lot of potential. The story line fizzled out and with it the book. I read the first 80 pages to a point when they leave their home. I'm sorry I couldn't find it as enjoyable as many others have. I got it on recommendation of a religious friend. I found the religious references too blunt, the story slow and thick like mud. The characters were not fitting in well and were unlikable company.

I have to agree with the publishers who rejected it: Older children won't like it, nor will younger ones. Why so many adults have given it high praise is a mystery to me. In my opinion it's not a page turner. The author himself stated that it wasn't an allegory, and that it doesn't really make any sense. It's simply a very dull story about humanized rabbits. I actually don't mind allegorical stories with talking animals, such as George Orwell's "Animal Farm," but this is another thing altogether.
