This fictionalized version of the life of Yoshiko Kawashima begins with her arrest after World War II for treason against China and aiding the Japanese in China. The novel then relates her story. Born in 1907 and named Hsien-tzu, she was the daughter of a favorite concubine of Prince Su of the Ching royal family. At age seven, she was taken to Japan and renamed by Naiwa Kawashima, who agreed to groom her as an agent in establishing a new nation in Manchuria. Beautiful, ruthless, vindictive, the grown-up Yoshiko plots, spies, and kills. The author's name is the Americanized version of Li Pik-Wah, a popular Hong Kong author who has written many successful books and screenplays. This is her first translated work.
