A £500 banknote has been stolen from Lady Lydiard. There are several suspects: her drop-dead-gorgeous adopted daughter (the prime suspect), her trusted footman (in love with adopted daughter), her roving nephew, and The Honorable stud farmer also in love with adopted daughter). Alas, there is only one clue, Suspect the very last person on whom suspicion could possibly fall. So there we have it: beauty, jealousy, rivalry, a scalawag, and to boot, two lawyers (one disbarred). As usual, Collins sways suspicion among the players until the reader is totally confused. Not up to par with his major works, but worthy of an evenings read anyway.
