I was really looking forward to finding a new mystery series with an English sleuth. I am not sure you can say that Merrily Watkins is a sleuth. She just seemed to fall into a mystery and kind of fell into solving what was going on in this town. I am giving it some slack, because it is the first book of the series. The scene has to be set and the characters identified and analyzed. However, I am not sure that was accomplished. Merrily comes across as ditsy with a daughter that is more savvy than her mother. I thought I would scream if Merrily called Jane, her daughter, 'flower' one more time. If I was Jane, who is 15, I would scream for sure. I am going for the next book hoping things will get better. I'll keep you posted.
