This book is both a Gothic and suspense novel. One of Carol Goodman's writing strengths is bringing a real sense of her novel's settings to the reading. This time she wove myth, folklore and fairy tales into the plot to enhance the atmosphere of the girls' school where Meg Rosenthal and her daughter are living. When Meg's husband dies suddently, she is forced by economic realities to leave her comfortable suburban life style to teach at a girls' school, taking her reluctant teenaged daughter with her. The mysteries build somewhat predictably as the novel progresses. This book didn't captivate my attention, and I sometimes had to suspend disbelief at the coincidences, so I was somewhat disappointed at the conclusion.
