A huge disappointment. We learn very little about her actual work in the collections and what the collections were. The items she bought seem like an afterthought.
We know she is black living in a white world. We get that already and don't need it repeated over and over. We do not need her mother's warnings over and over. We don't need her tentativeness over and over. We get it.
What we need are the actual details of the collection, why it is important, how she shaped it, what it means to the world, etc.
This book ends up being a soap opera and a wasted opportunity.
There are so many better books about women surviving and thriving against the sexist and racist odds.
