I ALMOST gave up on Neil Young's second book, "Special Deluxe [A Memoir of Life and Cars]" before I started it. Listening to the author read his work on audio (9 CDs), he prefaces the work by stating that this is a work about the cars he's owned over the years. (Originally it was going to be cars and dogs, but he realized his dog ownership record was somewhat spotty.) I certainly didn't want to devote 9 days of my commute to/from work listening to ANYONE tell me about the cars they've owned over the years.

I decided to listen on for a little while. And it was probably one of the best decisions I've made this month. Mr. Young may have based each chapter on the car that he (or in the early chapters, his parents) owned, but it was really a book about his life his accomplishments, his challenges, and the people he associated with at the time and how the car of the moment reflected that slice of his life.

It was one of the best non-fiction books I've read / listened to all year.

RATING: 5 stars. Neil Young can write lyrics, but he also has his father's gift for writing prose
