I bought this book new; sadly, it was not worth the expense. The protagonist, a woman, does not come across as realistic at all. Her boorish mannerisms and her tendencies towards crudeness (the continuous use of the f- and c-words) are a major turn-off. The author clearly also has something against Catholics from the bashing he gives that religion throughout the book. He also makes multiple jabs at politics he doesn't agree with. It was very distracting and detracted from the plot. Even so, good characterization can overcome these flaws, but the supporting characters were wooden and tainted with the same crudeness and unrealistic behavior. After 100 pages, it became increasingly difficult to finish the book. I try to complete the first book of a series to give an author a chance to change my opinion, but I gave a sigh of relief when I finally turned the last page. The book was very disappointing, and I won't be reading the rest of the series.
