This book completely absorbed me for several days, and I must note that I am not a fan of Robert Jordan or George R.R. Martin. Many of the other reviewers on this page are able to comment more cogently than I, so I will just go ahead and give it my absolute highest recommendation.

Important note: I got so caught up in this story that about half way through I went to Amazon (clicking through from PBS, of course) to order the next volume, Words of Radiance. Much to my horror, their description of volume two contained three or four major spoilers! Whatever you do, avoid reading about the sequel until you have completed the first volume.
