This is the first book I have read by Kathy Herman and it will definitely NOT be the last. The suspense begins in the very first chapter. Rhonda and Jed Wilson are awakened by a window-rattling explosion. A house-boat has caught on fire and soon afterwards explodes. This tragedy has a major impact on the people in this small town of Baxter. Everything is not exactly as it seems and Jed is determined to find the truth.
Kathy Herman is a Christian author who tells a suspenseful story. It was hard to put the book down. Besides being a suspenseful thriller, this book is rich with character development, including their spiritual development. You see how the characters change in their relationship to each other and to God. Unlike some other mystery/thrillers I have read, I really cared what happened to the characters and came close to tears by the end.
This book is very realistic about how people react to tragedy in their lives. It asks the hard questions and shows us that life can be very cruel at times, but it does not have the bad language, sexual innuendo or graphic violence that many mysteries have.
I am looking forward to the 2nd of 5 books in the Baxter Series.
