I would recommend reading Dying Breath before this book. You do not have to but many of the main characters from Dying Breath return to have a more leading role in this book. You will not be lost if you do not read Dying Breath first.

The size of the book 450+ pages throws you off of a quick read but once you start reading the books draws you in and the pages fly by.

The ending is a little disappointing if you like books with neat, clean no question endings.
