I have many Muslim relatives, and spend much time on issues in Central Asia, so I do have a good deal of exposure to Muslims. I am not sure if, in major cities, Americans think "terrorist" when hearing that someone is a Muslim. "Burqas, Baseball and Apple Pie" would have the reader think otherwise.
